How to be mentally prepared for a game

Mental performance is an important part of every athletes performance. I truly believe that mental health is just as important as physical health. Coaches, friends, and teammates can see if you are physically hurt or struggling. Mentally, however no one may know that someone is struggling but the person that is experiencing it. I feel as if this is why often times mental health and performance are often times overlooked. Simply because you can't see it like you can see a broke ankle. I believe that mental performance is becoming a bigger thing every single day. I am in awe of athletes who are stepping up and speaking up about their struggles they face on a day to day basis. The courage and strength they have to do so is impacting so many lives. It is my hope that the stigma society has on mental health and performance will come to an end. No one should ever be shamed for bettering themselves. In time, I hope that I will live to see this through. Here are a few tips that you can do to have a better performance and be mentally prepared for your next game.

Tips:

  • Get a routine before the game

  • Before you walk into your facility for practice or a game, park whatever is going on outside of your sport in the car. Escape from everything but your sport. Be in the moment.

  • Focus on the process and not the score in the game.

  • Remind yourself of strengths and abilities that you have.

  • Put all of the pressure on yourself during practice. When it comes time to a game know that you have done everything you can to prepare yourself for this game and there's nothing else you can do.

  • Embrace the nervousness, butterflies, and jitters. Instead of it being anxiety, turn it into excitement, energy, and motivation.

  • Breath.

  • Have fun!
